Thrift Store Shopping

This morning was a great morning for hitting the thrift shops.  It's getting colder and we have a need for winter coats, and Isabelle has earned some money to spend.  What better place for her to get a great value for her nickels than the thrift store, right?!  :)

But first we went out to the Allen County Farm to join a nature hike put on by the parks department.  We grabbed hats and layered sweaters over t-shirts, but it was brrrrrr  chilly until we got warmed up.  Definitely need to look for winter coats.

But you know how it is at the thrift stores, you have to go in with an open mind because you just don't know what you're going to find.....
A red winter coat for me!  This is a water resistant coat that will be great in the cold and snow.  And it's red!  $3.99
And honestly, how could I pass up this beauty.  A hip-length black leather coat with black on black trim around the collar, across the shoulders, and on the cuffs and pockets.  *sigh  I splurged and bought it for myself.  $5.99

Snow pants for Isabelle!!  They actually had 3 pr in her size and surprisingly she chose the pink over blue (her favorite color.  Weird thing was the 3 pr all had different prices -- $2.99, $4.99 and $5.99.  Pointing this out to the cashier and pointing out that these had already been mended once on the straps, I got the price reduced to $2.99.  I'd have paid $5 for them, but they should have paid better attention.  $2.99

Warm fleece sweat pants for Isabelle.  $2.79
 42.
And a Frankling goes to school game which is a great game for preschoolers up through age 8, which makes it not-so-painful for the grown-ups too.  :)  $.99

So yes, I ended up with two winter coats for myself and none for Isabelle, but for less than $20, I'm very pleased with our thrift store outing.  The snow pants were further down on the list and she does need a couple more pair of pants.  And I always browse the games and puzzles as well as housewares for a too good to pass up buy.  Isabelle is down for her afternoon rest now, and we'll head out to another thrift store this afternoon to continue the search for a winter coat for her.

Please share your thrift store successes in the comments!
Cheers!

  1. The last time I went to the thrift store I found a thick black wool coat with a hood for $8! That's a little on the high side but super low for Southern California prices! It's stylish, really warm and fits great! I'm excited about it.

    1. A couple years ago, I too, found a wool coat that I loved at the thrift store, It was a vintage, full length and red. It was a beauty! And just $12.

I loved it so much that I took it to Australia which means I wore it all of zero days! But i had a friend there who was moving back to New Zealand and thinking I was in Australia permanently, I gave it to her!

It's sad people here in the US don't have more of an appreciation of good wool coats. No, they're not snowproof, but the styling is classic and they last forever.

      Congratulations on your find!!
