Thrift store sheets....

....  to make a tablecloth and an apron.

I've had it in my mind for a while to make a housekeeping apron for myself and more recently I decided I wanted a tablecloth for our dining table.  These are wants, not needs, so not a high priority, but just something I browse for when I'm at the thrift store.

A couple days ago, it happened.  Looking through the buy/sell/swap page, there was a listing for 2 king size flat sheets and a super single fitted sheet for $7.  Two solids and a geometric print.  That'll do!  Sold!!




This afternoon, with a movie playing to keep me company, I've been cutting and hemming the red geometric print to be a table cloth.  We have a round dining table, but I've decided to cut it square for more versatility.  And I'll shop for some clear vinyl to put over it so it doesn't have to go into the washer after each and every meal. (You know how it is eating with a little one at the table.  :) )





I'm quite please with how it's turned out.

Tomorrow, I'll spend some time looking through the patterns I've saved on my pinterest board http://www.pinterest.com/anndenee/sewing-apron/ and make a plan to either wing it and design my own pattern for the apron or spend the bucks on buying a pattern.  Actually making it will be a project for either Tuesday or Thursday.

    The tablecloth came out great! I can't wait to see the apron!

    Machines and I do not generally get along, and I have not had very happy relationships with my two previous sewing machines, but I keep wondering if it might be time to try again. With everything being available online, I could teach myself how to use it and care for it now. This kind of post inspires me further :-) I need an apron for cooking (used old baggy shirts in Maine). If I made one myself, it would be done by now! I've looked in vain for an appropriate baggy shirt in the charity shops!

    Anyway, well done!

    While I've always had a sewing machine in my home, sewing projects come and go for me. Right now my biggest challenge is having a little one under foot, but that will get easier with time. Husband helped out yesterday by taking her for an outing so I had uninterrupted sewing time.... very relaxing for me.

So Much Stuff

We live in a world of SO MUCH stuff. It's overwhelming just how much stuff there is in our world, at least in the US part of the world. Yesterday, I had a couple of hours to kill, and because my husband and I have decided we would prefer to furnish our home with antiques, I decided to take a walk through the local antiques mall. I'm in the pillowcase business!

Part of being a stay at home mom and making sustainable living choices is keeping expenses down, but the other part is to increase the income, too.  And working from home allows me to develop multiple small income avenues rather than just going after the one big avenue of income. With that in mind, I've been brainstorming, trying to come up with a project for the cold winter months.  I've kicked around various crochet ideas, but was truly inspired when I came across the idea of making custom pillowcases. Here are some photos of the one I whipped up this morning specifically so I could take photos to promote this new business venture. Isn't that a lovely pillowcase?  I can't wait to share with you all the pillowcases I have planned! Come spring, I'll add chickens, well eggs, as another avenue.  And of course the garden will go in which will reduce our food spending in a big way. ssshhhh....

A small voice calls out of the darkness... "Mom." I come rushing up out of my own darkness, formulate an answer, and call back.. "Yes." The small voice sends out a plea... "I can't find my blanket." I send reassurance... "I'm coming." I tell myself - don't go back to sleep - and then fumble with the covers as I sit up on the side of the bed and reach for my glasses. Not that they will help much in the pitch black of the house at this pre-dawn hour, but I put them on anyway. Walk gently around the bed being careful not to bump into it and wake the sleeping husband. And then count the steps before reaching the brick step.  There it is.  Two steps up and across to the bedroom door. No way around it.  The light has to be turned on. "Close your eyes." I say to the small person, owner of the small voice. *click* No worries. She's still asleep. All the blankets are on the floor. I arrange all the blankets back over her.  Tuck...
